Umpiring in the WBC

The Wetaskiwin Ball Club is actively seeking to recruit officials for baseball, with a particular focus on supporting the House League at the 11U, 13U, 15U, and 18U levels.

Umpiring presents a fantastic opportunity for youth, teens, and adults to engage with the game of baseball. It not only helps young individuals develop valuable leadership skills and build confidence but also offers a unique perspective on the sport. Many of our umpires are current players in the Wetaskiwin Ball Club (WBC), and taking on an umpiring role allows them to deepen their understanding of the game. However, it's important to note that a baseball background is not a requirement for those interested in obtaining umpire certification.

The Wetaskiwin Ball Club is dedicated to fostering the growth of umpires. Umpires have the chance to officiate at various levels, including Community, Representative, and even Provincial levels, offering them enriching experiences while also providing compensation for their efforts. Aspiring umpires begin their journey by achieving Level I certification prior to the start of the season. The costs associated with this certification is covered by WBC, provided the umpire commits to officiating a minimum of five (5) games for the club. Depending on their age and experience, Level I certification allows umpires to officiate at most Community and Regional levels. Level II certification opens the door for occasional Provincial level umpiring opportunities, again contingent on the individual's experience and age.

In addition to officiating league games, Community level umpires may also have the chance to participate in local tournaments, further enhancing their umpiring experience.

Individuals must be a minimum of 12 years old in order to start working towards a Level 1 certification. WBC is dedicated to providing our young umpires with all the tools to succeed and gain confidence to grow as an umpire.

We will make every effort to supply 2 umps for every level (11U, 13U, 15U & 18U) games, however, this is sometimes not possible, in those cases a parent volunteer will be required to base ump. If the game is rained out or cancelled, then umpire does not get paid. If the umpire has already arrived at the diamond for game time, or if the game is started before it gets cancelled, then the umpire gets paid full rate.

Umpires must attend a clinic every two years to maintain certification.

WBC has a Umpire Coordinator who schedules Umpire assignments. The Umpire Coordinator also ensures payment to Umpires by managing the tracking process once the games are completed.
